New Genesis
was the result of a generous grant by Astrobiology and the Arts. CrossTalk collaborated with the Advanced Stage Motion Control Class to create an entirely new work with a number of new instruments. Brian Luce, professor of flute, also collaborated on this project.

PEXY - Photo Electric Xylphone - There were two PEXY systems, each played with flashlights. When a beam of light hit one of the sensors, it fired a sound just like playing a pad on an electronic kit. Each PEXY system had nine notes and was hung from the left and right sides of the stage.

LIGHT HARP -The Light Harp is played by breaking a laser beam with the hands. There are nine notes on the Light Harp and it was played from a Hydrolic riser.

The CELL - The cell is played by breaking a light beam inside one of the 12 hexagons with the hand.

The SUN - The sun is a PEXY-style instrument with nine photo-electric cells. It is also played by light, but in the performance, was often played by the intelligent lighting system.

Hydrolic Lifts - The Advanced Stage Motion Control Class built three lifts that were capable of raising and lowering three feet. They could also move on and off stage on their own power. The Light Harp, The Cell, and the Sun were played by CrossTalk members moving on and off stage on the lifts.

Intelligent Lights - The performance of New Genesis used three Intelligent Lights. These were pre-programmed and controlled during the show to have the lights "play" the controllers along with the members of CrossTalk. In essence, CrossTalk members were playing along with mechanized robotic lights.

Light Sensor Follow Spot - The students in the Advanced Stage Motion Control Class created a sensor grid that could track location in real time. Brian Luce wore a sensor on his shoulder that was tracked by a grid hung from the ceiling. Whereever Brian went on the stage, a follow spotlight tracked his every move by determining his position on stage and controlling the spotlight.
